Living with Diabetes: Frequent Doctor Visits Best for Controlling Diabetes

Image

Visiting the doctor more regularly may be one important way for individuals to gain better control over their diabetes, according to a new study published in the medical journal Archives of Internal Medicine. Researchers found that when patients visited their doctor once every two weeks, their blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure levels all dropped significantly.

Due to financial and medical-insurance factors and increasing demands on healthcare professionals, the researchers acknowledge that it may not be practical for every diabetes patient to see their doctor this often. However, they suggested this type of schedule may be useful for stabilizing individuals who have very poorly controlled diabetes.

Either way, the team said there may be a number of benefits for diabetes patients who visit the doctor more frequently, and these factors may go beyond simply administering treatments and checking blood sugar. The visits may give individuals with diabetes more confidence in taking charge of their own care.
