Back Pain - Treatment

There are some over-the-counter products and self-care measures that you can try to treat back pain.  

AT HOME REMEDIES 
Rest your back 
- When lying on your bed, sleep on your side with a pillow placed between your knees or sleep on your back with a pillow placed under your knees to reduce the pressure placed on your back. 
Participate in aerobic exercises to increase your flexibility and strengthen your back muscles. 
Get a massage to loosen your back muscles and relieve pain. 
Get physical therapy to strengthen your back muscles and improve your posture. 
Get acupuncture to relieve pain. 
Get a back brace to protect your back from further injury. 

OVER-THE-COUNTER PRODUCTS

Acetaminophen 
- Acetaminophen help reduce pain. 
- Examples include: Acetaminophen (Tylenol) 

NSAIDS or Non-steroidal Inflammatory Drugs 
- NSAIDS reduce pain and inflammation.
- Examples of NSAID include Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and Naproxen (Aleve). 

Topical pain relievers 
- Topical pain relievers can be applied to the skin to reduce pain. 
- Ingredients found in topical pain relievers include:  Hydrocortisone, Methyl Salicylate (Wintergreen Oil), Camphor, Menthol (Peppermint Oil), Methyl Nicotinate, Capsaicin (Red Chili Peppers), and Trolamine Salicylate.
