Premenstrual Syndrome - Causes

It is not very clear what exactly causes PMS, but genetics may play an important role in the incidence of PMS. Many women with PMS have closely related family members with a history of PMS.

Some possible contributing factors include:
- Fluctuations in certain hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone. For women with PMS mood swings, the normal fluctation of estrogen and progesterone before menstruation may trigger serontonin usage problems in the brain.
- Low levels of vitamins and minerals
- Eating an excessive amount of salty foods may lead to bloating
- Drinking alcohol/caffeine
