Sore Throat - Treatment

Most sore throats go away on their own within a week without having to take any medications. However, if your sore throat is caused by either a virus or bacteria, your doctor may prescribe antivirals or antibiotics, respectively.  Do NOT take antibiotics if your sore throat is caused by a virus because antibiotics may kill all of the “good” bacteria in your body. You may also take over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) to help relieve the pain you get from a sore throat.

There are also some at-home-remedies that you can try to make your sore throat feel better:
- Use a humidifier to moisten the air in your room to soothe the throat.
- Gargle with salt water to soothe the throat.
- Suck on hard candies or lozenges.
- Get plenty sleep to rest your voice.
- Drink lots of liquids (for example, water, hot tea, and chicken broth) to keep the throat hydrated.  Stay away from alcohol and caffeinated beverages.

Please go see your doctor if:
- Your sore throat lasts for more than a week
- You have difficulty swallowing or breathing
- You have a fever >101 F
- Your sore throat worsens even after treatment
