Dry Mouth - Causes

Dry Mouth, also known as Xerostomia, is a condition in which you have very little to no saliva in your mouth. As a result, your mouth feels extremely dry.
Some of the more common causes of dry mouth are medications, health conditions, and cancer therapy. 
Dry mouth is a common side effect of medications. Common medications include: 
- Lipitor – lowers cholesterol  levels
- Norvasc – lowers blood pressure
- Prilosec – treats heartburn
- Prevacid – treats heartburn
- Claritin- relieves symptoms of allergies
- Hydrocodone/Acetaminophen – relieves pain 
- Celebrex – relieves osteoarthritis pain
- Zoloft – treats depression
- Premarin – relieves menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes

Dry mouth can also be caused by health conditions such as:
- Diabetes
- Lupus
- Sjogren’s syndrome
- Kidney failure
- Asthma
- Bone marrow transplant
- Thyroid dysfunction
- Stroke

Cancer therapy can also lower the amount of saliva in your mouth and cause dry mouth. Some cancer therapies include:
- Chemotherapy
- Radiation therapy
