Warts - Causes

Warts are skin infections caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). This virus gets into the body through open skin (i.e. cuts, cracks, or scratches on the skin). Because warts are contagious, you can increase your chances of getting the virus and therefore warts on your body if you physically touch someone who has warts or touch anything someone with a wart has used or stepped on. While this virus can invade any part of the body, the body parts most commonly affected include the hands, elbows, knees, face, and feet. Our focus for this section will mainly be on warts found on the feet.
