Hepatitis A Outbreak Potentially Linked to Frozen Berries

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are currently working with the Food and Drug Administration and public health officials in several states following a multistate outbreak of Hepatitis A.

As of June 4, 2013, 49 cases of acute hepatitis A have been reported by seven states (Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Hawaii, and California) so far. This outbreak may be associated with eating a contaminated product. There have been 11 hospitalizations out of the 49 reported cases. More than three-quarters (76%) of the ill persons interviewed reported eating Townsend Farms Organic Anti-Oxidant Blend, a mixture of frozen berries and pomegranate seeds. 19 patients reported purchasing the product from Costco markets, but investigations are ongoing to determine if this product is being sold at other stores.

Costco has since removed this product from its shelves and is notifying customers who purchased this product as far back as February 2013. This product was also sold at Harris Teeter stores in 10 ounce bags. A voluntary recall has been announced by Townsend Farms; consumers are advised against eating ‘Townsend Farms Organic Anti-Oxidant Blend’ and to discard any remaining product.

The CDC is advising consumers to contact his or her health care providers if the product was consumed in the last two weeks to find out whether or not they should be vaccinated since the Hepatitis A vaccination can prevent illness if it is given within two weeks of exposure to contaminated product. Consumers are advised to contact a healthcare provider if symptoms such as yellow skin or eyes, abdominal pain, pale stools, and/or dark urine develop.
