Common Cold & Flu- Risk Factors

Though people can get the common cold at any time of the year, most cases occur typically during the Fall and Winter months. This is because cooler weather causes people to stay indoors, making it easier for the virus to transmit from person to person.

In addition, people are at increased risk of getting the common cold if they:

- Are Infants or preschoolers
- Are smokers
- Live in crowded environments where they come into close physical contact with other people
- Have poor nutrition
- Have psychologically demanding jobs

However, people do NOT increase their risk of getting the common cold if they:

- Go out with wet hair
- Live in cold environments
- Experience sudden changes in temperature
