Gum Disease- Treatments

There are some over-the-counter products and self-care measures that can be used to reduce symptoms associated with gum disease. Though you can get pain relief with various products, it is still important for you to go in to see your dentist as soon as possible to prevent further damage to your teeth and gums.

To reduce pain and swelling
- Rinse your mouth with warm salt water

To get pain relief :
- Benzocaine (Anbesol, Orajel, Dent’s Toothache Gum). It is usually available in the form of a cream, ointment, gel, or gum. If you are using a cream, ointment, or gel, you can apply a thin layer to the aching tooth. If you are using the gum form, you can press it into the aching tooth and leave it there. Do NOT chew the gum.
- Non-steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug or NSAID including Ibuprofen(Advil, Motrin) and  Naproxen(Aleve, Mediproxen)
- Acetaminophen (Tylenol)
