Canker Sore - Causes

The exact cause of canker sores is still unknown. Stress or injury to the gum tissue is attributed to be the cause of simple canker sores, other attributions include certain foods like citrus or acidic fruits and vegetables, i.e. lemons, oranges, pineapples, apples, figs, tomatoes, and strawberries can cause a canker sore to form or aggravate the existing canker sore. Sometimes a sharp tooth surface or dental appliance, like braces or misfitted dentures might also trigger canker sores.

Some cases of complex canker sores are triggered by underlying health conditions like an impaired immune system, nutritional problems (i.e. vitamin B-12, zinc, folic acid, or iron deficiency), gastrointestinal tract diseases (i.e. Celiac disease and Crohns disease).
