Yeast is a fungus that normally lives in the vagina in small numbers, but when there is too much of the fungus in the vagina, a vaginal yeast infection or vulvovaginal candidiasis develops. Be aware that there are other conditions (e.g. bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis) with symptoms similar to a vaginal yeast infection.
